Indian art has followed a consistent tradition ever since the Indus civilization. In the course of time some old elements were rejected, fresh conventions evolved and foreign elements assimilated. Popular art become increasingly stylised.

How much devotion our sculpture has evoked through the ages! What pleasure generations have derived from its beauty, grace of line and sensuousness! Yet all this work was painstakingly executed not for renown or individual self expression but out of dedication and discipline and pride in one’s craftsmanship.

The special distinction of our sculpture lies in its ability to capture many layers of spiritual meaning in physical form. The serene countenance of the Mathura Buddha proclaims the utter peace that comes from overcoming desire hence envy and suffering. The tranquillity of the Chola Parvati emanates from the self-possession acquired after intense tapas. But not all our sculpture is serious. Side by side with the exploration of the soul, is celebrated the exuberance of creation and there are many motifs and figures which seem to have no ostensible motive except that of sheer fun.
